Boss order and readiness for beginners (Valheim 1.0.16)
The eight main bosses in order, what summons them and what they drop, and how to check with two calculators whether your armor and food are enough for the next fight.
Valheim has eight main bosses, one per biome. Each one needs an item to summon it, and each one drops something you need for the next step. This guide lists the order and the key numbers from our game data, then shows how to use the boss readiness check and the progress tracker to decide when you are ready.
The order
Our data gives every biome a progress tier. The bosses follow it:
| # | Boss | Biome | Health | Summon with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eikthyr | Meadows | 500 | 2 deer trophies |
| 2 | The Elder | Black Forest | 2,500 | 3 ancient seeds |
| 3 | Bonemass | Swamp | 5,000 | 10 withered bones |
| 4 | Moder | Mountain | 7,500 | 3 dragon eggs |
| 5 | Yagluth | Plains | 10,000 | 5 fuling totems |
| 6 | The Queen | Mistlands | 12,500 | not in our data |
| 7 | Fader | Ashlands | 20,000 or 25,000 (sources differ) | 3 bells |
| 8 | Kall Fimbulbringer | Deep North | several phases, disputed | 3 malicious blood |
The Ocean shares tier 3 with the Swamp and has no boss. For Kall Fimbulbringer our sources disagree on the health of each phase; the boss page shows both readings.
What the bosses drop
Apart from its trophy, each boss drops a material that opens up the next steps. Only uses that our recipe data confirms are listed here:
- Eikthyr: 3 hard antlers. The antler pickaxe needs one of them plus 10 wood at the workbench.
- The Elder: a swamp key.
- Bonemass: a wishbone.
- Moder: 10 dragon tears. The artisan table is built with them.
- Yagluth: 3 torn spirits, used for the wisp fountain.
- The Queen: majestic carapace, 3 or 5 depending on the source.
- Fader: Fader relics, 3 or 5 depending on the source.
- Kall Fimbulbringer: sacrificial blood and a crown jewel, which goes into the Crown of Valheim.
What hurts them, and how they hit back
Every boss ignores chop and pickaxe damage, so axes and pickaxes only count with their other damage types. Beyond that, our data lists these differences from normal damage:
- Eikthyr: takes every combat damage type normally. It hits with pierce (up to 20) and lightning (up to 15).
- The Elder: very weak to fire, immune to poison and spirit. Hits with blunt and pierce.
- Bonemass: weak to blunt and frost, resistant to slash, very resistant to pierce and fire, immune to poison. Its strongest hit is poison (up to 130).
- Moder: weak to fire, immune to frost. Its frost attack reaches 200.
- Yagluth: very resistant to pierce, resistant to fire, immune to poison. Deals fire and lightning besides blunt; the fire value is disputed.
- The Queen: resistant to pierce, immune to spirit. Deals poison besides slash and pierce.
- Fader: resistant to pierce, immune to fire and spirit. Deals fire besides pierce and blunt.
- Kall Fimbulbringer: resistant to pierce, fire, frost and lightning, immune to spirit.
The boss pages in the database list every attack with its values. Spell, projectile and summoning attacks are not fully resolved in our data, so the real damage can be higher than listed.
Am I ready? The boss readiness check
The boss readiness check compares what you wear and eat with a template of typical gear after the previous boss. You pick a boss, then enter:
- your armor for head, body and legs, plus your cape,
- up to three foods,
- the resistance meads you have, and optionally your weapon.
The template is derived from the data for the boss's tier. For armor it takes the strongest piece of that tier per slot at quality 1. For health it takes the base health of 25 plus the three foods with the most health up to that tier. In the Meadows those are cooked deer meat (35 health), cooked boar meat (30) and grilled neck tail (25), so 115 health in total. Seasonal items never enter the template.
The result is a traffic light. From 90 % of the template you count as ready, from 60 % as risky, below that as not ready. The weakest of armor, health and resistances decides. For each elemental damage type the boss deals, the check looks for a mead you own that resists it; a missing mead makes the result risky at most, never red. Below the light you see what would help: armor to craft or upgrade, stronger food, a mead.
The check is a rough guide. Skill, weapon choice and terrain matter as much as the numbers.
Keeping track: the progress tracker
The progress tracker is the short version. Tick the bosses you have beaten, and it shows the next one, the item that summons it and the gear and food that are typical at that point. The three mini-bosses in our data (Brenna, Geirrhafa, Zil and Thungr) have their own list.
Tracker and readiness check share one saved state. It stays in your browser; nothing is sent to us. To move it to another device, copy the share link or export a JSON file.
About the data
All numbers come from our own compilation of the game data for Valheim 1.0.16 (assumed build, not confirmed). Where two sources disagree, we say so and show both values on the database pages. World modifiers change damage and drops; we show the values of the default preset. This is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Iron Gate or Coffee Stain.
